নদ-নদী

Several rivers have flowed by the side of Shibganj upazila in Bogra district of Rajshahi division.

Although the upazila is mainly situated on the banks of the river Karatoya, it is joined by several other tributaries.


1. Karatoyah


 Karatoya originates from the mountains of Nepal at the foot of the Himalayas. The river then crossed Gobindganj through Gaibandha district and was called a tributary of the Brahmaputra. Entering through the western edge of Palashi mouza of Maidanhata union of Shibganj police station of Bogra district, it flows for about 2 miles along the boundary of Kalai-Shibganj thana, takes a bend to the west of Kachua mouza and reaches Patai mouza of Gotila, North Krishnapur, Chandar and Kichak union. At this bend of the Patai branch, 1 branch goes a little further to the north, crosses Madargachhi and falls straight to Matian. The 2nd branch goes straight south to Matian, Gopinathpur, Chakkanu of Atmul Union; Chak Gopal of Shibganj Union came to Natmaricha of Bihar Union and it was divided into two parts. 1 branch crossed the Bogra-Gaibandha road and proceeded in a crooked way to Tekhariya, Achalai of Rayanagar Union, respectively. Par-Achalai Alokdiyar, Kartikola of Raynagar Union, Chandijan, Anantabala, again crossing Bogra-Gaibandha road, enters Bogra Sadar with 3/4 turns at Nagar Kandi. It may be mentioned here that the 2nd branch of the first division merges directly with Nagar river through Dahila, Vasubihar in Bihar Union to the south. Chelupara, Natigara of Subgram Union, Bhatkandi, Maltinagar of Sultanganj Union, Chuck Lokman, Latifpur, Betgari, Sujabad, Duralia of Khottapara Union, Chhabinagar of Chupinagar Union, Trikusta, Ramnagar, Bangara, Joanpur, Hajipur, Ranbirbala of Sherpur Municipality, Gerusa of Mirzapur Union, Krishnapur, Madanpur, Kashiabala and merged with Halhalia in Binodpur and the main branch bends and the students come to Haraji and make an abandoned path. That is to say, it started moving downwards by creating a horse-shaped type of land which intersects Garo, Haldibari, Darihasara, Sadar Hasra, Ghoga, Sirajganj-Bogra road and enters Raiganj police station of Sirajganj district through Baraidah. The length of the river is about 50/55 miles and on its banks are well known towns like Daridaha, Bogra, Sherpur, Mirzarpur, Ghoga etc.


2. Gangnai:


From Palashi of Mauja Maidanhata Union in the northwest of Shibganj police station, proceed three miles along Kalai Thana-Shibganj police station boundary of Joypurhat and take a 2/3 turn east at Gotila to the north. Chakkanu, Chak Gopal of Shibganj Union, Natmaricha of Bihar Union, has joined Karatoya near Banail. Its length is 10/12 miles. Kichak, Bihar etc. are located on its banks. This river does not have water in all seasons.


3. Nagar


The tributary of Karatoar is one of the rivers of Nagar Bogra district. It exits Karatoya near Jagadishpur in Atmul union of Shibganj police station of Bogra district and flows along the district boundary of Bogra and Joypurhat for about 10 miles and enters Dupchanchia police station. Then 1.5 miles east of Amalpur in Chamrul Union of Dupchanchia Police Station, Masimpur, Chamrul, Mostafapur, Porapara, Atgati, Khalas Dhap of Dupchanchia Union, Sanchaypur, Alohali, Talpara of Talora Union Galia enters Singra police station near Damdama and falls into Atrai river near Singra bridge. The length of the river is about 65 miles. The river is very spiral in nature and has a lot of water in the rainy season. The river flows along the boundaries of Shibganj thana of Bogra district, Kalai and Khetlal thana of Joypurhat district and Dupchanchia, Sherpur, Adamdighi, Kahalu and Nandigram thana of Bogra district. Therefore, this river is termed as the river which determines the Indo-Bangladesh international border and district police station boundary.


4. Bengali river:


Among the rivers flowing through Bogra district, Bangali is probably the longest and its location is on the east side of Karatoya and Atrai rivers. It emerges from some small canals / reservoirs of Nilphamari district, flows through the lower reaches of Syedpur thana and flows through the eastern part of Rangpur district as a general riverbed. The Katakhali stream of Gobindpur police station in Gaibandha district continues to flow south-east under the name Bangali. Two streams flow from Saghata Thana of Gaibandha district through Bisur Para and Bishwanathpur mouzas of Sonatala thana of Bogra district and then it divides into two parts up to Kamarpara, Rangbar para, Namazkhali, Shikarpara The main branch passes through Namazkhali, turns around Satbeki in Sariakandi police station and meets at Haldiabagh in Sonatala police station.
